Trans-Inclusive Culture

A partnership of cultural organisations across the UK working to advance trans inclusion

The University of Leicester’s Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) has established a partnership – supported by Art Fund, the national charity for art – with leading UK museums, galleries and heritage organisations to support a bold and ambitious step change in the capacity and confidence of the UK’s culture sector to advance trans inclusion.

Confirmed partners include Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales, Culture Leicestershire, Glasgow Women’s Library, National Museums Liverpool, National Museums NI, The New Art Gallery Walsall, Royal Air Force Museum, and the Whitworth, The University of Manchester with more organisations joining as the project develops. They will work closely with a team of experts in trans-inclusion, equalities law and ethics to develop new guidance and practical resources for the UK’s culture sector that will be launched in 2026.

The partnership will build on, expand and update Trans-Inclusive Culture: Guidance on advancing trans inclusion for museums, galleries, archives and heritage organisations, developed and launched by RCMG in September 2023.

The guidance, created by Suzanne MacLeod, Richard Sandell, Sharon Cowan, E-J Scott, Cesare Cuzzola and Sarah Plumb, can be downloaded for free on the RCMG website.

About RCMG

The Research Centre for Museums and Galleries (RCMG) carries out research that stimulates new thinking and creative practice enabling cultural organisations to become more ambitious and impactful in nurturing more equitable and inclusive societies. Our research combines academic rigour and a commitment to socially-engaged thinking and practice. Collaboration with cultural partners is central to our research practice – we build teams that comprise diverse skills, experiences and perspectives to meet the specific needs and requirements of each project. Our research creates spaces within which different forms of expertise come together. We seek to generate insights – for collaborating partners and the wider sector – that open up new possibilities for museums and their role in society.
